According to the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the inflation rate in Germany was 6.1 percent in August, almost unchanged compared to July, when it was 6.2 percent. With the current figures published on Friday, the Wiesbaden authority confirmed its preliminary estimates presented at the end of August.
Clothing and shoes were not among the main price drivers. Products from this category were an average of 3.5 percent more expensive last month than in August 2022. Compared to the previous month of July, prices in this area rose by 1.7 percent.
Food and energy products remain price drivers
In August, however, consumers had to spend significantly more on food (+9.0 percent) and energy products (+8.3 percent) than a year ago. Overall, goods rose by 7.1 percent and services by 5.1 percent year-on-year.
Ruth Brand, President of the Federal Statistical Office, assessed the current development: “The inflation rate remains at a high level,” she explained in a statement. “Price increases for food and energy are above overall inflation and are keeping the inflation rate high. In August, the base effect of the 9-euro ticket from the previous year became noticeable again, which had an increasing effect on the inflation rate and overshadowed the price-dampening effect of the Germany ticket. This base effect will no longer apply starting next month.”
