MUNICH (dpa-AFX) – The chip company Infineon wants to buy more. “From today’s perspective, I’m definitely aiming for acquisitions, on a small or medium scale, which could well happen in the billions,” said company boss Jochen Hanebeck of the “Süddeutsche Zeitung” (Tuesday edition). New large locations were not planned. “I am a big believer in economies of scale, so our strategy is: We want to make our three large existing wafer production sites even larger and expand them,” said the manager.
According to Hanebeck, a quick end to the semiconductor crisis is not in sight. “We will see bottlenecks in semiconductors that we obtain from contract manufacturers, for example in the area of microcontrollers and connectivity, into the coming year,” said the Infineon boss. If he looks a little further into the future, then it is even “very likely that the next shortage of power semiconductors will soon be around the corner”.
The manager is also concerned about the escalation of the conflict over Taiwan. “In recent years, during the semiconductor crisis, we have noticed what it means when the manufacturers in Taiwan cannot supply enough chips. If, however, no chips were to come from Taiwan at all, it would have a profound impact on all sectors of the economy, worldwide.” said Hanebeck. Europe is even more dependent on semiconductors from Taiwan than on energy from Russia. In the case of very sophisticated semiconductor products, there is no possibility of replacing this production elsewhere on the necessary scale in the next five to ten years
