Industrial area still closed after Beugen fire due to asbestos

The industrial area in Beugen, where a major fire raged on Sunday, is still closed. Asbestos has been found in the area, so no one is allowed in. As a result, some twenty companies are unable to work.

Parking lots of many companies are empty on Monday morning. The offices are dark. Yellow ribbons have been stretched around the entire industrial estate in Beugen, with the words ‘Caution, Asbestos’ on them.

A multi-company building went up in flames here on Sunday morning. That building housed battery company KWS Seuren and office furnishing company Hahebo, among others. There is nothing left of either company. From the main road along the industrial estate you can still see the smoldering remains of the two companies.

Thirteen trucks can’t hit the road
The investigation into asbestos has started again since this morning, the municipality of Land van Cuijk said. There are security guards at the entrance to the industrial estate. “We are hired until tomorrow night. So it can take that long,” says one of them.

Arnoud Heutink of transport company Heutink is also standing by the ribbon. “We are exactly opposite the company that burned down. I’ve had thirteen trucks ready to leave since Sunday evening,” says Arnoud. “They have to travel all over Europe.”

Municipality will come with more information later
“The annoying thing is that we don’t have any information yet. Then we hear that others have been allowed to remove cars from the site. We don’t get it,” says Arnoud irritated.

The municipality of Land van Cuijk has announced on its website that entrepreneurs will be informed in the course of the morning how long the industrial estate will remain closed.
