Indoor EM in Hamburg: German hockey women in the final

Status: 09.12.2022 2:25 p.m

The German women’s hockey team managed their fourth win in four games at the European Indoor Championships in Hamburg and are thus early in the final. The DHB men won against Switzerland and are also on course for the final.

On Friday the German women celebrated a 4:2 (2:2) victory against the Netherlands. The “Danas” made up for a deficit of 0:2 in the first half of the prestige duel. A double strike in the final quarter brought the DHB selection, for which Pia Maertens (two), Cecile Pieper and Anne Schröder were successful, then onto the road to victory. The Dutch women scored Laura van Heugten and Mabel Brands.

“It was very good for us that we sometimes fell behind, were challenged and had to work hard.”
— Franzisca Hauke

In the evening (6.15 p.m.) the team of national coach Valentin Altenburg has the last group game against the Czech Republic. From a sporting point of view, it is no longer important for the “Danas”: Since they are top of the table, they are already qualified for the European Championship final, which begins at 3:35 p.m. on Saturday. The Netherlands and Ukraine will determine their opponents in a direct duel on Friday evening (7.30 p.m.).

DHB men beat Switzerland 13:8

The German men, who started the tournament rather arduously with a 4:4 win against Belgium and a last-minute win against the Netherlands (6:5), celebrated their second win on Friday. With the 13:8 (4:4) success against Switzerland, the defending champion kept his chance to play in the final of the European Championship again.

“I wouldn’t mind if we played one or two games a little more calmly. We’ve won two games now, but we struggled in all three games,” Tobias Hauke told NDR. “Perhaps it’s good for us that we’re not among the favorites against Austria.”

Touchstone Austria is waiting

Against Switzerland, the hosts, who in Hamburg are mainly playing with indoor specialists and young players due to the World Cup preparations of the A squad in India, turned a 1: 4 through an intermediate sprint to an interim 8: 4 lead. The outstanding player was the triple goal scorer Niklas Bruns.

The decision on the finals for the DHB men, who are coached by U21 coach Rein van Eijk instead of national coach Andre Henning at the European Championship tournament, will be made on Saturday in the final preliminary round encounters with Vice European Champion Austria (11:30 a.m.) and the Czech Republic (6:15 p.m.). ).
