Indiana Jones and the Quadrant of Destiny: 12 things to know before seeing the movie

1. Professor Henry Jones Jr.

It is the archaeologist’s real name – which, however prefers to be called Indiana after the much loved dog which he had as a child. Tenured professor at Princeton in New Jersey, Indiana has also taught in other faculties and, during breaks, travel around the world in search of archaeological finds of extreme value. In the first three films of the saga, his adventures take place from 1935 to 1938the fourth instead (Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull) is set in 1957 while in Indiana Jones 5 we are in 1969.

2. Marion Ravenwood, the great love of his life

A great expert also in the field of love, Indy has really only loved Marion (Karen Allen), daughter of one of his university professors. The two had a history, before knowing them both in Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), ed they were about to get married but then something went wrong. In the first film of the saga they get back together but in the following chapters the woman disappears. In Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008) the couple marries and is revealed to have had a sonMutt. Marion comes back in Indiana Jones 5 in a beautiful final scene, he glosses over a very long love story.

3. Sallah, best friend

Played by John Rhys Davies, Sallah is one of the few recurring characters in the saga. A handyman digger who lives in Egypt, the man is a likeable patriarch who he often invites Indy to his nice house in Cairo and that, above all, she helps him save himself from several twisted situations. Present both in Raiders of the Lost Ark that in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Sallah also comes back in Indiana Jones 5 (but not in Egypt, in New York) in a scene that, already from the trailer, made many viewers cry.

4. Indy’s family

In the first two chapters there are details about Indiana’s sad family past. But it’s only in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade who turns out to have an archaeologist father like him (the legendary Sean Connery) and that the mother at one point packed her bags and abandoned her husband and son because of her husband’s intransigence and workaholicism. After years without even speaking to each other, they make up; moreover Indiana manages to save his father from certain death with the power of the Grail.

5. Son Mutt Williams

Henry Jones III (Shia LaBeouf) appears in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. He prefers to be called Mutt and use his stepfather’s surname. The boy grows up mainly with his mother, until at the age of 20, a young rebel with a passion for motorcycles, meet Indy. At first resentful, he soon changes his mind accompanying his father on his raids. In this last chapter, Mutt is not present but we can’t say, cause spoilers, what happened to him.

6. Hatred of Nazis

As one might expect from an American who fought in World War II, Indiana holds a deep grudge against the Nazis. But this hatred dates back much earlier, since in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade Indy has very close encounters with both Hitlerstill far from declaring war on the world, and with the beautiful Nazi archaeologist Elsa Schneider. That, shortly before meeting Indiana, she had also won (and broken) Dad Henry’s heart.

7. A young helper is always handy

One of the most famous characters of the whole saga was undoubtedly Short Roundlittle Chinese boy – played by recent Oscar winner Ke Huy Quan – in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. Indy and Shorty met when the man caught him trying to rob him but then the two immediately became inseparable friends. Unfortunately, Short doesn’t appear in the new film, in its place is little Teddyplayed by Ethann Isidore.

8. The role of Phoebe Waller-Bridge

Actress and screenwriter best known for the series Fleabag, Phoebe plays Helena, Indy’s “goddaughter”.. His father was Basil Shaw (Toby Jones), who has spent much of his life hunting the Quadrant of Destiny and the young girl tries, with the help of Indiana, to complete her father’s work. Director James Mangold drew parallels between Helena and Jean Harrington, Barbara Stanwyck’s character in the 1941 film Lady Eve. An extravagant comedy where the woman is a professional con artist in cahoots with her father. Should we therefore trust Helena or not?

9. A war hero

As said before, Indiana Jones and the Quadrant of Destiny It is set in the late 60’s. However, the film opens with a sequence of about half an hour set in 1944, where we see a digitally rejuvenated Harrison Ford and where we find out that our archaeologist not only fought in WWII but also became a highly decorated war hero.

10. The bad guy on duty

In 1980, George Lucas created the character of Indiana Jones and decides to entrust the direction to his friend Steven Spielberg because the young director had wanted to direct for some time a film along the lines of the adventures of James Bond. Although Spielberg is not behind the camera, the villain of this latest chapter is Mads Mikkelsenone of the most “beloved” enemies of the 007 saga seen in Casino Royale.

Here she plays the role of Jürgen Voller, a Nazi officer who wants to get rid of Indy once and for all. The character is inspired by Wernher von Braunwho worked as a rocket scientist in Nazi Germany before being drafted into NASA’s Apollo program.

11. Harrison Ford’s Thousand Jobs Before Fame

Before becoming an actor in the early 1970s, Harrison Ford worked a variety of jobs, such as the carpenter and the pilot of small aircraft. All qualities that, in the following years, served above all for the Indy adventures given that, in many films of the saga, Harrison himself was the protagonist of the most fast-paced action scenes. Such as in Indiana and Jones and the Last Crusade where, first on horseback and then with bare hands, face a German tank that wants to smash it against a rock.

His stuntman Vic Armstrong, not surprisingly, has declared in the past «In the sets with Harrison I didn’t work as much as in the others. If he hadn’t become a great actor, surely he would have been very successful as a stuntman».

12. Harrison Ford’s latest film as Indiana Jones

The legendary actor turned 80 right during filming of the film. Last he stated: “This is the last film in the series, and this is the last time I will play the character. I also think it will be the last time you will appear in a film ». Some rumors, however, speak of an upcoming Disney+ TV series, in the works so it’s easy to predict that the franchise will continue but in a different form. Perhaps along the lines of the TV film, certainly not successful, of 1992 The Adventures of Young Indiana Jones. In short, a bit like Montalbano.
