The blue campaign in the Californian desert does not start off on the right foot. In the first Masters 1000 of the season Lorenzo Sonego, the only Italian to take the field on the first day of the tournament, gave way to the Australian Jason Kubler (n.75 Atp). The Turinese, back from the quarterfinals in Dubai, suffered a decisive break on the only chance granted in the first set (in the ninth game) and then failed in his attempt to reverse once he reached the tie-break of the second set, going out with the score of 6-4 7-6(4) in one hour and 52 minutes of play.
