There are tournaments that can, if not change, certainly launch a career, and who knows if this Indian Wells is not this, for Luca Nardi. Eliminated in the qualifiers, he found himself catapulted directly into the second round due to the forfeit of top seed Etcheverry and did not miss the great opportunity. The Pesaro born in 2003 beat the Chinese Zhang Zhizhen, one of the players considered most on the rise, in three sets: 6-3 3-6 6-3 the score, in an hour and 54 minutes. A game like Nardi: perhaps not with the maximum consistency found around the circuit, but the shots of the 20 year old Italian are truly a pleasure for the eyes. Zhang probably found himself taken aback by Nardi. In the first set the Pesaro player found himself ahead 5-1 in a flash, only to then give up one of the breaks he had won and close 6-3, but the set was truly dominated even more than the score. In the second the Chinese took measures a bit, becoming more dangerous with the serve, with a foul Nardi surrendering 6-3, but in the third the blue got back into the chair with the serve (in the end he will have 71% of the points won with the first, but it was also at 81%) and closed the match with another 6-3 in an hour and 54 minutes. Nardi finds himself in the third round, probably waiting for His Majesty Novak Djokovic as his opponent in the third round.

SONEGO OUT

Lorenzo Sonego gets off at the second stop in the Masters 1000 at Indian Wells. The Turin player, who in the first round had convincingly overcome the Serbian Miomir Kecmanovic with a great service performance, surrendered to Cameron Norrie with a double 6-4 in a split hour and a half. Norrie, number 26 in the world, was champion of the 2021 edition of the Californian tournament, which was moved to October due to the consequences of the pandemic. The Briton, who even then was number 26 in the world, had thus become the first champion outside the Top 25 in the roll of honor since 2010, after Ivan Ljubicic. Sonego, who with Norrie had won the only previous match in Monte Carlo in 2019, Fognini’s year, was unable to repeat his good performance against Kecmanovic yesterday, with many ups and downs, a less effective serve and too many errors. In the first set, a break was enough for Norrie to close 6-4 while in the second, Sonny conceded two, recovering one and canceling a match point in the eighth game, but then losing 6-4. but Sonego’s day doesn’t end here: in about an hour he will be back on the court in doubles with Jannik Sinner against the Russian duo Khachanov-Rublev. Sinner himself will play against Struff at 0.00 on the night between Sunday and Monday. In the men’s tournament Grigor Dimitrov also advances (winning over Muller in two sets), and three Frenchmen Arthur Fils (beaten Davidovich Fokina), Ugo Humbert (advance over Kypson) and Adrian Mannarino (nice success over Machac), while Holger Rune finds himself in the third round without playing, after the withdrawal of the now worn out Milos Raonic.

GOOD LUCIA

A splendid Lucia Bronzetti wins the third round in the women’s tournament by overcoming Anhelina Kalinina, 6-3 6-4. The 27-year-old from Nova Kakhovka had won both previous matches in straight sets against the Rimini girl who, up until today in the season, had not yet managed to win two matches in a row in the main draw of the same tournament: she reached the second round in Brisbane, Linz and Dubai where she defeated Daria Kasatkina on her debut.
