Sidhu Moose Wala, whose real name is Shubhdeep Singh Sidhu, has been shot dead in India at the age of 28. The Indian rapper, singer and politician was killed while driving in Mansa district, in the northern Indian state of Punjab. In the hospital, only his death could be determined. His death is said to be related to a gang war.
Low security level
The killing is believed to have come a day after Moose Walas significantly reduced government security measures. The action was part of a broader response by the Punjab State Government. As a result, security protections for over 400 high-ranking people were lifted.
Mixing hip hop, rap and folk music, Moose Wala started out as a songwriter before launching his singing career which eventually propelled him to fame in India and countries like the UK and Canada. Moose Wala was also politically active and joined the Indian Congress Party in 2021. He then ran unsuccessfully in the elections to the State Assembly.
A statement by India’s Congress Party on Twitter said:
“The assassination of Shri Sidhu Moose Wala, a Punjab congressional candidate and talented musician, comes as a terrible shock to the Congress party and the entire nation. Our deepest condolences to his family, fans and friends. We stand united and fearless at this time of great sadness.”
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann said no culprit will be spared to find out who is responsible for Moose Wala’s assassination.
