Refugees from Ukraine, like other asylum seekers, are entitled to a financial allowance for food, clothing and other personal expenses, unless they receive these things in kind. Because the cost of living has risen in the past period, these financial allowances are indexed. In this way, the Netherlands meets the European obligation to support refugees in their livelihoods. The new amounts are based on the minimum cost of living according to Nibud.
Refugees who live in a guest household receive an extra allowance, the housing component. This will be adjusted to € 80.91. Refugees can use this money for public transport, family visits or sports, for example. They can also use the money to contribute to the costs of the host family. But this is not mandatory.
Time for implementation
The indexation will take place on 1 October 2023 and will be processed in the Regulation for the Reception of Displaced Persons in Ukraine (RooO). To give municipalities time to prepare for indexation, we will now share the new amounts.
