Increased police surveillance in the Menen border region pays off

The police can now carry out systematic identity checks, without there having to be a reason to do so. The decision runs from January 24 to March 6 and will then be evaluated. According to Chief of Police Vandecasteele, the approach pays off especially in petty crime.

The decision was mainly made to deal with the nuisance in the vicinity of the border, in the Barracks. The police now conduct increased patrols with intervention squads and with weekly patrols with the federal police cavalry. It also works more closely with the French police.

The measure may be extended if necessary after an evaluation at the beginning of March.
