Inattentive for a moment: Union Berlin also loses against Napoli

Oh man Union. Another defeat. This is bad for the 5-year rating!
I’m disappointed, I would have expected more than 0 points after three games.

Always this 5 year old talk. What’s that supposed to mean? No club competes with the motivation of the 5-year ranking. A few lost games aren’t the end of the world, Germany’s place in the rankings is far too secure for that. And even if you were to move one backwards, it would have absolutely no effect.
Union does a good job in terms of sport, so you can’t really blame yourself too much. Unfortunately, in the end you end up with zero points.
Such a union season has little influence on the 5-year ranking.

You can also see it another way:
The five-year ranking may not matter to Union from a ranking perspective alone. But if they had scored several points, Union would have earned money, gained prestige, etc.

Or was Union’s goal to be quietly kicked out of the group with 0 points? Then of course they achieved their goal.

Although I don’t even blame Union directly. But it was TOTALLY foreseeable! In the last two decades I can hardly remember a “surprise team” that was able to save its form over the summer break. Union is just joining in with the others.

But it’s strange that this seems to be primarily a German problem. I would also see RC Lens as a surprise team and they would score points. And there were and are always such teams.

In Germany the attitude always seems to be the same:
End of the second half of the season: “We definitely want to get into the CL/Euroleague!”
After the summer break: “Shit on the CL/EL, avoiding relegation is more important!”

As I said, it’s not Union’s fault that the other teams were so subpar last year. But you could see that the other teams weren’t unbeatable and three worlds superior.
In the end, the Union supporters will probably celebrate not being relegated this year (which would be sad after they got into the CL last season).

Even Red Star has its sights set on third place. I think THAT is what we should have expected from Union. But after the miserable performances in the Conference League back then, it doesn’t surprise mesmile.
