Status: 08/10/2022 00:01

The NDR and the first broadcast the funeral service for Uwe Seeler in the Volksparkstadion live on TV, on the Internet and on the radio today. The virtual book of condolence is open until late in the evening. Seeler died on July 21 at the age of 85.

Four prominent speakers, led by Hamburg’s Mayor Peter Tschentscher, will give mourning speeches at the farewell to football legend Uwe Seeler in the Volksparkstadion. Bernd Neuendorf, President of the German Football Association (DFB), HSV Sports Director Jonas Boldt and actor Olli “Dittsche” Dittrich, HSV fan and friend of the Seeler family, will also speak at the one-hour ceremony.

The relatives of the honorary captain of the German national soccer team have put together a music program in which pianist Joja Wendt and the Hamburg Seamen’s Choir will take part.

Virtual condolence book reopened

The funeral service begins at 2 p.m. and is expected to last an hour. NDR broadcasts live on TV and on NDR.de from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. The first broadcasts live from 1:59 p.m. to 3 p.m. NDR Info reports on the radio from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. in a full report. The virtual book of condolence is open until late in the evening. Thousands of mourners had already shown their sympathy shortly after the death of the honorary captain of the German national team

Scholz and Tschentscher among the guests

Around a thousand guests are invited to the funeral service, including Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD). “A legend died with Uwe Seeler. He shaped and promoted German football like no other,” said deputy government spokesman Wolfgang Büchner, quoting Scholz: “Uwe Seeler is not only a great footballer, but also a great person gone. Us Uwe, he will be missed.”

Stadium gates open from 12.30 p.m

The memorial event in the Volkspark is open to the public, the stadium gates will be opened from 12.30 p.m. The stadium guests are asked to refrain from floral decorations in favor of a donation for the Uwe-Seeler-Foundation. According to the Senate of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, the funeral service was prepared in close consultation with the family and with the participation of HSV and DFB.

Funeral service in the Michel would have been possible

Since the former centre-forward was awarded honorary citizenship in his native town in 2003, a funeral service in Hamburg’s Michel would have been possible at the family’s request. Further honors for “Us Uwe” are already being prepared. HSV investor Klaus-Michael Kühne, who currently holds the naming rights to the Volksparkstadion, has already discussed renaming it to the Uwe-Seeler-Stadion.

It would also be conceivable to rename the east stand, from which the former top scorer had followed HSV games for decades. There are also plans to name a street near the stadium after the honorary captain of the German national soccer team. In this case, however, a regulation applies in Hamburg, according to which such a renaming must be postponed until at least two years after the death of the person to be honored.

HVV tips for getting there

The HVV recommends alternative routes for the journey to the Volksparkstadion, since due to construction work between Altona and Elbgaustrasse, buses are currently operating instead of S-Bahn trains. Shuttle buses to the arena are provided from the Hagenbecks Tierpark underground station and from the Othmarschen S-Bahn station.
