In Oud-Stuivekenskerke, near Diksmuide, there is an almost forgotten war chapel that recalls a bloody battle from the First World War. Many passers -by do not know the place, but she was once the scene of heavy fighting in the underwater area along the IJzer.
“Many cyclists just pass without knowing what happened here,” says Rudy Baert of the Friends of the Onze-Lieve-Vrouwehoekje.
The chapel was built on the wishes of former warrior Medard Depuydt, Klaroenblazer during the war. “Because 40 regiments have fought here, this place was not allowed to be lost. It is my greatest wish that it remains,” says Aline, daughter of Medard Depuydt.
Exactly 100 years after the initiation, there was again praying for peace. Bishop Lode Aerts made the link with current conflicts worldwide: “At that time, despite the war, people believed that peace was possible. Today we want to commemorate that again.”
