“Lance’s fifth is top, an opportunity has been lost with me, but both cars are in the points and we have to see the positive side of things,” Fernando values.
“The race has been fun, the circuit has offered us several overtakes and we were in the battle, it is a positive point for the car,” he considers
Fernando Alonso finished ninth in the Las Vegas GP and has added two important points for Aston Martin, which has successfully overcome the difficult Las Vegas challenge with Lance Stroll’s fifth place. The Silverstone team’s loot could have been greater, but a spin by the Asturian at the start has partly ruined his expectations.
“I still have to see what happened. I lost the car, I don’t know if I was sandwiched between cars or I was alone. After seeing myself in front of the Alfa Romeo and that I was going in the wrong direction, I thought that would be the end. I thought that “My race was over in the first corner. So I’m happy to be able to score points,” Alonso explained at the end of the race, in which he was helped by the safety car to begin his comeback.
“We have achieved more than we thought. Lance, starting from 19th position, finished fifth, which is something top. And well, we have lost an opportunity with me to do something more, but tenth in qualifying, ninth in the race and with the two cars in the points, you have to see the positive side of things,” he said.
Regarding the development of the grand prix and the future of a race that returned this year to the F1 calendar after four decades of absence, Alonso has made constructive criticism: “I think it’s good. But the grip level of the asphalt is very low. I know it’s the same for everyone, but on a street circuit it is a very dangerous factor. Lando Norris had a pretty bad accident, it seemed like we were racing in mixed conditions, half dry and half wet, and that on a street circuit is a bit strange. Inside the car the race was fun, there were entertaining battles. But the level of grip and the temperature of the asphalt put the tires under a lot of stress and with a lot of graining. Maybe we can learn. “I think the second year will be much better,” he summarized. Fernando.
Looking ahead to the final test of the season, next weekend at the Yas Marina circuit in Abu Dhabi, Alonso does not set specific objectives, although he recognizes that he would like to say goodbye to the season with a good taste in his mouth: “The last one remains, we are going to try to enjoy it, it has been fun here, the circuit has offered us several overtakes and we were in the battle, it is a positive point for the car,” he concluded.
