Behind the scenes of the Koko Suomi leipoo program, things happen that the average viewer would never guess.
ATTE KAJOVA
The eighth season of the Koko Suomi leipoo program will start in the fall with a cake. The cheerful baking program reminds me of the lightness of a summer day and fluffy dream cakes. The scenes, however, hide some funny coincidences inside.
Anne Kukkohovin acted as judges of the program he hosted Markus Hurskainen and Toni Rantala reveal that the competitors’ will to win sometimes went to extremes, causing embarrassing situations.
– The raw material gimmick is one of those things. If someone asks for four and a half kilos of raw materials for the production of ten people, someone will rot there. Then the competitor has thought that he can start over if it goes wrong, says Hurskainen.
Competitors’ recipes are approved by production well in advance, and contestants are no longer allowed to make changes to their recipes after this. For some, the excitement of the competition is so high that they have even tried to smuggle ingredients into the baking tent.
The judges tell how, in the history of the program, attempts have been made to bring small liquor bottles, spices and ready-made products such as chocolate bars into the tent in the shelters of the essu. In the final result, however, everything should be self-made, so ready-made candy bars violate the rules of the competition.
– And then for us. It doesn’t matter how bad a story you throw, it’s always really funny about the competitors, Rantala jokes.

Rock Paper Scissors
Even if everyone’s dream is to taste delicious baked goods for days, there are also such palettes of flavors that make the judges’ hair stand on end.
– We have done it so that one has sacrificed and the other has not tasted it, Rantala says.
Hurskainen adds that the works are often viewed upside down if their taste is not good. He jokes about how the two have a rotation tactic where they keep a precise record of who tasted the last one.
– All it takes is a look that it’s my turn, Rantala joins in joking.
Although we try to give feedback to the baker as friendly as possible, there are also times when the judges had to be direct about shocking tastes.
– Especially those own recipes that the competitors have had time to develop… I wouldn’t combine all the flavors myself, even though I’m after the flavors, Hurskainen laughs.
Another problem is that when baking in a hurry, the competitor may mix up, for example, salt and sugar. The amount of ingredients is precisely calculated for each, so there is no possibility of starting from scratch.
Shocking flavor pairings are, however, rare considering the skill level of the entire program. In general, the flavors are on point and the judges have had the chance to taste better baked goods than each other.
– This new season really has the best level that has been seen in the entire program’s history, Rantala praises.
