In the Czech Republic, EU plans for nuclear power do not go far enough

PRAGUE (dpa-AFX) – According to a report, the plans of the EU Commission to classify nuclear power and natural gas as climate-friendly in the Czech Republic do not go far enough. The liberal-conservative government in Prague under Prime Minister Petr Fiala has submitted several proposed changes to Brussels, the Czech business daily “Hospodarske noviny” reported (Friday).

Accordingly, Prague demands that nuclear power should not be classified as a transitional technology. So far, it has been envisaged that only approvals for new nuclear power plants granted up to 2045 will be subject to the so-called Taxonomy Ordinance.

The demand that repositories for the highly radioactive waste should be ready for operation by 2050 was also rejected. The search for a suitable location is still ongoing in the Czech Republic, although locations not far from the Bavarian border are also being considered.

The planned annual limit values for carbon dioxide emissions from gas-fired power plants also met with criticism. Germany’s neighbor wants to increase the share of nuclear power in the electricity mix by more than half by 2040 and phase out coal by 2033. Temelin Nuclear Power Plant

– next to the nuclear power plant Dukovany one of two locations – is only about 60

kilometers from the Bavarian state border./hei/DP/eas
