In pictures: Orvelte’s slip yacht

An unusual sight in Orvelte, because today there was a procession of dogs and horses during a drag hunt.

A special form of equestrian sport, in which a pack of English foxhounds ‘hunts’ on the slip, followed by riders. At the end there is a reward for the dogs. “It’s a game,” describes Ann Stein of the Royal Dutch Hunters’ Association (KNJV).

Three runs of 6 kilometers long were planned in and around Orvelte. “There is a break after every run,” says Stein. “Then the riders, horses and dogs can recover. The 32 dogs that participated per run will receive a piece of cow stomach as a reward.”

Dozens of slip hunts are organized every year, especially in the Achterhoek and Twente. Contrary to what the name suggests, an animal is not hunted. This is only imitated by an artificial hunting trail that has been constructed.
