In Picture: Drenthe commemorates war victims during Remembrance Day

On the grounds of Norgerhaven prison in Veenhuizen, an ex-prisoner played the taptoe signal at his own request prior to the two minutes of silence. Then he concluded with the Wilhelmus in the courtyard of the prison. He had already done this for the previous two years, then as a detainee. The man had traveled from his hometown of Amsterdam to Veenhuizen especially for the commemoration of the dead.

His previous performances caused quite a stir in prison. “I heard that there were also many positive reactions outside PI Veenhuizen to the video that was made last year,” said the former detainee proudly. The fact that he was able to pick up his love for playing the trumpet again during his time in prison makes him grateful. “I have been detained several times, but thanks in part to the care and attention I received in Veenhuizen, I am now convinced that I will not make the mistake again.”
