«There is no health without mental health»

Presenting this event, the President of the Aiutiamoli Odv Association, Cristina Ardigò, explained. «There is no health without mental health and we cannot give up in the face of the great malaise that young people experience before our eyes. We must act, with a listening made of patience, care, attention, which can also be conveyed through the universal language of music.”

It’s still. «Let’s help them, Association and Foundation, they work every day to ensure that there is more attention towards mental distress, so that the broken young lives of boys like Dave, Jacopo, Roberto, Luca and many others do not only increase the “case history” of suicides among young people, but become everyone’s responsibilityso that it never has to happen again. Together we can spread a culture of welcome, inclusion and listening towards those who live alone and stigmatised, with mental illness, so that they are not ashamed of asking for help.”

Dave’s story and the terrible data on suicide

The event is entitled Dave for young. Davide (Dave to his friends) was a music-loving boy who fell into the dramatic tunnel of addiction. «He is unable to ask for help and makes an extreme, tragic gesture». By will of his father, we wanted to create this event, Dave for young. Dave thus becomes an acronym for Discomfort, Listening, Life, Balance. «To establish the pillars of what is the desirable path in dealing with youth difficulties».

The “case history” of suicides among younger people already mentioned is terrible. In 2015, a WHO report identified suicide and self-harm as the third leading cause of mortality among adolescents in the world.preceded only by road accidents and respiratory tract infections. Some updated data, just released by the Bambino Gesù Hospital in Rome, speak of 387 cases of emergency access to the emergency room for attempted suicide and suicidal ideation among young people in the last year. (15 years is the average age, 90% girls). Hospitalizations in the protected Neuropsychiatry department, where the most complex cases are managed, were 544 (+10%).

Finally, at the beginning of the year UNICEF announced that in Western Europe suicide is the second cause of death among very young people, with 4 cases per 100,000. Between the ages of 10 and 19, more than 1 in 7 children live with a diagnosed mental disorder. In 40% of cases it corresponds to anxiety and depression.
