Mary & George tells the story of a mother and son – and Jaakko I.

In the new psychological drama series, a time traveling king is made Jaakko I’s and of VI to the court and the beginning of the 17th century. Mary & George series is based on of Benjamin Woolley to the information book The King’s Assassin: The Fatal Affair of George Villiers and James I – and is inspired by true events.

Mary Villiers (1570–1632) is of George Villiers (1592–1628) mother. She is an intelligent, ambitious and calculating woman who trains her middle son to seduce the king. King James I of England (1566–1625) was also King James VI of Scotland. He was known to have an eye for young, handsome men. One of the ones left in the history books is Robert Carr and another George Villiers. Jaako’s love letters to George have survived to this day.

In the series, mother Mary, who seeks power, succeeds in her efforts, and George really becomes the king’s lover. The position is also noted with high-ranking titles: George will eventually be named the Duke of Buckingham.

The men really got to know each other in 1614, when George was 21 years old. Jaakko was 26 years older than her.

When the ruthless scheming has paid off, the Villiers rise to the center of the court and become the most influential family in England. But at the same time as George’s position improves, the relationship between him and Mary, who controls the whole scheme behind the scenes, becomes difficult. George wants to prove that he is more than just a lover. He wants to leave his mark on history, regardless of the consequences. The translation of Woolley’s information book gives an indication of these consequences: The King’s Assassination – The deadly affair between George Villiers and James I.
