In Krista’s ‘package cupboard’ there is a gift from Sinterklaas for every child

Every child should receive a package from Sinterklaas. With that idea, Krista from Wognum converted her give-away cupboard in the front garden into a ‘parcel cupboard’. Just once, she thought at first. But after the bustle of last Sunday, she will also be holding ‘package days’ this weekend.

Likewise today. Parents who don’t have it wide can come pick out one gift. That is then also packed, if they want it. “People can choose a present themselves. Or ring the doorbell if they want it to be wrapped,” says Krista Leussink.

It started with one cupboard in the front yard with free menstrual products, and the give-away cupboard was added a few weeks ago. Now there are several crates, tables and cupboards, covered with a party tent and all. “I borrowed it from a neighbour. We build everything up in the morning, and it goes back inside in the evening.”

The parcel cabinet is open today between 10:00 and 17:00. Parents may choose a gift on behalf of Sinterklaas. The gift cabinet can be found at Parelgras 34 in Wognum.

Since her call on Facebook, people also keep bringing stuff. “Like these barbies. They are completely refurbished by a lady. She also sells them herself, the proceeds of which go to charity.”

The harrowing stories she hears in the news are dear to her heart. “I also know that if you have less, someone can do something for you. That’s nice. That’s why I’m doing this.”

With last weekend’s success, there may be another ‘parcel cupboard day’. “If donations come in, I want to stand with stuff again before Christmas Eve.”
