How notes Orda, Urazbaev is one of the akims who did not come out to the protesters during the protests in the country that took place in early January due to rising prices for liquefied gas. During the protests, the protesters managed to seize the building of the Alma-Ata akimat. In connection with the unrest, the authorities of Kazakhstan turned to the CSTO with a request to send a military contingent into the country. On January 10, the authorities reported that the situation had stabilized; on January 13, the CSTO forces began to leave Kazakhstan.

After the protests, in particular, the Chairman of the Board of KazTransOil JSC Dimash Dosanov and the Chairman of the Board of QazaqGaz National Company JSC Kairat Sharipbayev lost their posts. Both of them were married to the daughters of the country’s first president, Nursultan Nazarbayev.
