Werder Bremen won their first Bundesliga duel with HSV 2-0 (1-0). Larissa Mühlhaus contributed both goals.

It took less than five minutes for referee Riem Hussein to point to the spot for the first time in front of the record crowd. From their point of view, the Hamburger Svea Stoldt had played the ball with his hand in a criminal manner a few moments earlier. A tough decision for HSV, a lucky one for Werder. Werder striker Mühlhaus didn’t miss the chance and coldly converted the penalty to make it 1-0 (6th minute).

In the 17th minute, Bremen’s second goal was in the air. After a squeaky-clean counterattack, Maja Sternad was unable to spot her free teammate Verena Wieder. Instead, Sternad shot at goal, but aimed directly at HSV goalkeeper Larissa Haidner.

HSV comes out of the break well, Werder scores

In an overall fair football game, things still went well at times.

The second half started just as furiously as the first: a long-range shot from Hamburg substitute Maria Mikolajova became longer and longer – and slammed into the post of Werder goalkeeper Mariella El Sherif. In return, Sternad also failed to hit the post.

In the 56th minute, the referee pointed to the spot for the second time – and again in favor of SV Werder. This time, however, the handball was undisputed. Mühlhaus took the ball again and the Hamburg native converted again, making it 2-0 for the hosts.

Werder had El Sherif to thank for the fact that the guests were denied a goal. Among other things, she was there when HSV attacker Melanie Brunnthaler suddenly appeared in front of her goal (70th).

Next northern derby in February

Both teams had already met in the DFB Cup semi-finals in April. The team of then Werder coach Thomas Horsch won the game in Volkspark 3-1 after extra time, meaning Werder reached the cup final. Now Werder achieved their second win of the year against the Rothosen.

The next meeting between the two teams – the second leg of the current Bundesliga season – will take place on either February 21st or 22nd, 2026. The game will then be played again in Hamburg at the Volksparkstadion.
