Winning a medal is only secondary for triathlete Anne Reischmann in Hawaii. She announced other good news with her husband.

The German professional triathlete Anne Reischmann started at the World Championships in Hawaii – pregnant. The 33-year-old from Ravensburg jumped into the water in Kailua-Kona on Saturday morning (local time), while her husband Joel announced the “wonderful surprise” in a joint Instagram post at the same time.

Their path to the World Cup “took an unexpected turn,” Reischmann wrote there. While preparing for the World Championships, she found out that she was pregnant.

As the “Sportschau” reports, Reischmann is already in the 13th week of pregnancy. “As you can imagine, my plans and goals for Kona have suddenly changed,” Reischmann wrote in her post: “Fortunately, I feel good and strong most days and have continued my training. I’m not in top shape, but together with my team and my doctor I have decided to take part in the World Championships.”

In top condition, Reischmann would have been one of the contenders for the top ten on the approximately 226 kilometer long course involving swimming, cycling and running. But due to the pregnancy, the fight for a good placement and Pro Series points is becoming less important this year. “I will not compete with my usual ambition and determination,” said Reischmann. She also announced that she would withdraw from the competition if she felt unwell.

She called competing on the Big Island “an event I’ve dreamed of participating in for years and I’m so happy to be able to do it.” Her family also traveled to Hawaii to celebrate this special moment. Reischmann has been successful in sport in recent months: in March she won the Ironman South Africa and in June she came fourth at the European Championships in Hamburg.
