“In a country that no longer exists” tells the story of Suzie (Marlene Burow), who is discovered by chance as a model in the GDR. She immerses herself in the dazzling subculture of East Berlin’s underground. There she meets the extravagant Rudi (Sabin Tambrea), who teaches her the “upright model walk”, and she falls in love with the photographer Coyote (David Schütter).
The film by director Aelrun Goette deals with her own experiences and wants to give an insight into the fashion scene in the former GDR. Among other things, she highlights the fashion magazine “Sybille”, which shaped the image of women and beauty at the time, and the luxury brand Exquist. She also deals with youth cultures that designed their own collections of shower curtains and expressed their own form of resistance to the system with their fashion shows.
