In a few hours Annen was upside down

Every few meters a flag hangs on a lamppost or tree. The Dutch flag, upside down. Together with the red handkerchief, the symbol of the peasant protest. In Annen and Zuidlaren it was still relatively quiet in that regard, until last night.

“Almost all farmers from the villages around Annen and Zuidlaren took part,” laughs Ronald Smit from Annen. “As a result of the flags in Hoogeveen and other villages, we got the idea to hang the flag here as well.”

Between 25 and 30 men were summoned. The flags were up in about 2.5 hours. The farmers soon got the hang of it. “That flag has to be upside down, of course. So then two new holes have to be put in and then depending on how much space you have, you can hang them with tie wraps.”
