Oleksiy Vadatursky, owner of a large Ukrainian grain company, and his wife were killed on Sunday in a bombing raid on the southern Ukrainian city of Mykolaiv. This is reported by Governor Vitaliy Kim of the oblast of the same name.
Mayor Oleksandr Senkevych spoke earlier on Sunday of the most violent attack on the port city since the start of the war, now about five months ago.
BBC News describes Vadatursky as one of the richest businessmen in Ukraine. His company Nibulon specializes in the production and export of wheat, barley and maize. The group has its own fleet and shipyard and is located in Mykolaiv.
Vadatursky and his wife were killed by bombs falling on their home in the city. In addition to homes, schools and sports complexes were hit by a total of twelve rockets during the heavy shelling. Three other people were injured, the mayor said.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called Vadatursky’s death “a great loss for all of Ukraine” and said the businessman was building a modern grain market with a network of transshipment terminals.
Nikopol, another southern city in the country, was also bombarded with rockets on Sunday. About fifty rockets were fired at the city. One person is said to have been injured.
