IMG expands scheme for non-material damage, positive news for 36,000 people. ‘The impact of such processes is really great’

The Institute for Mining Damage Groningen (IMG) is relaxing the scheme for non-material damage for victims of the earthquakes.

From now on, everyone within the same family will receive the same amount as standard. In addition, those involved will receive the highest compensation of 5,000 euros more quickly.

The new scheme is beneficial for approximately 36,000 residents from the earthquake area who previously submitted an application. These people do not have to do anything themselves: they will be told before the end of November that they will receive at least the amount they requested as compensation for damages. This concerns a total amount of 45 million euros.

Snags

Two years ago, the IMG started a scheme to pay out non-material damage. There were many snags to this arrangement. Applicants were annoyed that people within the same household sometimes received different amounts. Many people found the criteria for the maximum amount (5,000 euros) too strict.

For example, residents on the edge of the earthquake zone who received compensation for physical damage at an early stage were eligible for 1,500 euros in non-material damage. Or that someone who completed the personal questionnaire differently than a family member also received a different amount.

Standard

The standard amount will now be 5,000 euros if there is reinforcement or demolition and new construction. “The impact of such processes is really great. That is why we are now offering the maximum compensation to people who are affected by this,” an IMG employee said.

The claims desk has been working on expanding the rules in recent months. This comes into effect on October 23. The majority of those involved will be informed in October. The IMG expects everyone to know their new damages amount by the end of November.

The scheme for children and young people under the age of 18 is also changing. “We have greatly simplified the application process for the parent or legal representative, and children receive the same amount as the parent.” They have to make the application themselves.

If someone is still eligible for non-material damage in the future, he or she can still submit an application.
