Images show red line through Jerusalem: protest action against judicial reform | Abroad

Drone footage shows a small group of people in protective suits spraying a red line along largely deserted roads leading from a police station to the Supreme Court in central Jerusalem. Along the side of the road was “draw the line” written in Hebrew, Arabic and English. A sharp sneer directed at Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu.

Protests against judicial reform in Israel have been dragging on for weeks. All attempts to reach a compromise have so far failed. The Israeli government wants the parliament to have more say over the legal system, while at the same time the Supreme Court is less powerful.

If the reforms are all implemented, this means a threat to the separation of powers, according to the opponents. They also fear that the rights of the minorities in the country, such as the Palestinians, will be endangered as a result. According to the prime minister, the reforms are necessary “to restore the balance between powers”.
