Thirty people were ticketed on Sunday in an illegal street race at an industrial estate in Zevenbergschen Hoek. Thirteen motorcycles and a quad were also seized by the police.
Around 150 cars and thirteen motorcycles gathered on Sunday for the illegal street race in the area of the Spoordreef and Geldersedijk. They came to watch or took part in the race.
Local residents have been complaining for some time that the peace is disturbed by the noise of illegal street races.
Early intervention
Fines had already been handed out at previous street races and participants and the organization were asked to leave the site. There was no response, so the police, together with the municipality of Moerdijk, intervened prematurely on Sunday.
The fines have been issued for various violations. The impounded vehicles are checked and if they do not technically meet the requirements, the owners are fined.
Placing fences
Mayor Aart-Jan Moerkerke van Moerdijk: “It concerns enormous nuisance for local residents and very dangerous situations. That has to stop. That’s why we went all out today and that paid off.”
To prevent illegal street races in the future, the municipality of Moerdijk will place fences on the industrial estate to prevent street races.
