“THEAria Salis must be brought back to Italy.” The father of the anti-fascist militant asked for a signal from the Government detained for almost a year in Budapest “in inhumane conditions” because she was accused of attacking some neo-Nazis. It would have happened on February 11, 2023 during the demonstrations of Honor Day which brings together thousands of right-wing extremists in the Hungarian capital to celebrate a Nazi battalion that attempted to prevent the siege of the city by the Red Army.
Ilaria Salis must return to Italy
“Citizens need answers from the institutions” said the woman’s father in the Senate during the presentation of the Ilaria Salis Committee promoted by Ilaria Cucchi. «We have never had them in recent months. My daughter she wasn’t caught red-handed and she is declared innocent. While the two people affected didn’t even file a complaint.”
Because she was arrested
Ilaria Salis was arrested with the charge of bodily harm with the risk of death towards two neo-Nazis, but also for alleged membership of a German criminal organization. For these crimes the woman risks up to 24 years in prison, even though there is no evidence to confirm either her participation in the violence or that she was among group members.
The trial in Hungary soon
Salis’ trial in Hungary will begin in a few days the committee was promoted by the Greens-Left Alliance senator Ilaria Cucchi to get people talking and making the girl’s story known: «She is not asking to avoid the trial – underlined the senator – but to serve house arrest here in Italy in detention conditions that respect human rights. It’s time for the government to look at this situation.”
The silence of the Government
The family members have repeatedly asked the Hungarian and Italian authorities to bring the woman back to Italy, however, the judges in Budapest have rejected all requests for repatriation and the letters sent by the family to the Government were never answered. Salis was offered an 11-year plea deal which he however refused, maintaining his innocence.
