IJmond Valentine’s Day rush comes at the last minute: “You have that with men”

The windows of IJmond flower boutiques shine again as usual, because the day of love is just around the corner. The red rose has been predominant for years, and according to florists, it seems that this romantic trend will not disappear anytime soon. No matter how hard the pink gerberas and red dahlias try…

Florist Rinus de Ruyter from Heemskerk is certainly not lagging behind on Valentine’s Day. The shop window is colored red and pink, with flowers, candles and various vases in the color of love playing a major role. However, there is only one item in the wide range that continues to attract attention: the red rose.

Always the same

“It’s nothing new at all,” says florist Ellen de Ruyter. “Every year it’s the red roses again. Men come at the last minute. It’s impossible to anticipate. We have very beautiful red vases, so we hope someone will fall for it. But many men only come once a week.” in the store for years.”

The red rose is also number 1 every year at the Duinroos in Beverwijk, says florist Jacky. “It’s a worldwide hit, right? Just look at America, you see that there too. But yes, a red rose also represents love if you look up the meaning.”

Last minute

Valentine’s Day is always busy, although the ladies don’t notice much of the hustle and bustle yet. “With Valentine’s Day, the crowds always come at the last minute, you have that with men. They hear it on the radio or read it in the newspaper. We only expect it to be busier tonight,” says Ellen.

It has been the same with Jacky for years. “It only gets busy on the day itself, because men are generally last minute. Often men in construction are egging each other on during the day and then after working hours a van comes along and five of them immediately get out. Then we know immediately what time it is.”

“Generally speaking, men are last minute”

Jacky, florist De Duinroos

Jacky and Ellen don’t see the rose trend changing anytime soon and Ellen thinks that’s a shame. “We would like something new,” she says enthusiastically. “But yes, men want something big and imposing. They want to show that they love someone and they do that with a large bunch of red roses.”

Ellen thinks it could be a bit more creative. “It is of course very personal, but I know plenty of people who are happier with a lovely bouquet than a large bunch of red roses,” says the florist.
