Finnish cross-country skiing star Iivo Niskanen criticized himself in harsh words after the men’s 50 km co-start race.
Niskanen skied at the head of the main group for a long time, but in the final stretch he froze. The Finn ended up sixth.
– Tactically, I skied very stupidly. I was too arrogant, Niskanen began in an interview with Viaplay and continued:
– I thought that I am so fresh that I can hit enough to finish, but in the last two rounds so much speed was taken away that a short hit was not enough.
Niskanen told Yle that he had been in good shape for the last two or three weeks, and on Sunday he had all the conditions to get a gold medal.
– I’m sure I’m in good enough shape, but the joint starts are like this. Shit, what shit at the end, it’s just not enough, Niskanen whipped himself in an interview with Yle.
Niskanen told Viaplay that there was nothing good about the race in the end, even though the skiing felt good and the skis worked great. The main goal was not achieved, i.e. the gold medal.
The Finn won a silver medal at the World Championships in Planica, when the men’s relay team came second on Friday. It doesn’t exactly warm Niska.
– It doesn’t matter in itself, when this was supposed to be a win, but now it wasn’t. Yes, these were miserable races, Niskanen shot about the races to Viaplay.
Norway’s Pål Golberg finally skied to win the race, defeating Johannes Kläbo in the final stretch, who crossed the finish line second.
Swedish William Poromaan took the World Championship bronze.
