Iggy Pop on Taylor Hawkins on his new album: ‘It was otherworldly’

Iggy Pop has announced his new album “Every Loser” for 2023, and some of the tracks also feature Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins, who died in March 2022. In an interview, Pop now spoke about Hawkins. “He plays on two tracks, he brought them to life,” he said. “He was a really interesting person and I’m sorry he’s gone.”

Pop told Audacy that he first saw Hawkins play when he supported the Foo Fighters in 2015. “I never quite understood what they were doing, and then I would stand there on the side of the stage and listen to this thing and listen to what [Hawkins] played, and it was out of this world,” Pop said. “It was advanced and powerful and unyielding, and at the same time very detailed.”

“He was a very intense guy, and he had a lot of energy – like an overgrown puppy,” Pop continued of Hawkins. “He also played me in a film. He played me in the movie CBGB and one poster showed his abs as my abs.”

Here’s the scene where Taylor Hawkins played Iggy Pop in the movie CBGB (2012):

Pop released the first single “Frenzy” from his new album in October. In the interview, Pop also spoke about writing “Frenzy”: “The physical environment was great, I was on a Caribbean island, in my beautiful pad, but that wasn’t where I was mentally or emotionally. Mentally and emotionally I was in good old USA fighting an asshole.”

He continued: “It was one of the truest examples of what happens when you’re in a very extreme state, something that feels like a fight or anger, a lot of things going around your head at the same time, and your different synapses Contributors to the new record include Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith and Guns N’ Roses’ Duff McKagan.
