Now he’s showing us his upper body, which has become even more wrinkled and flabby, as if it were an art project on the subject of transience. Mick Jagger would rather not do that. But Iggy Pop knows the strengths of his brand, the authenticity of a rebellious fictional character who never grows old and wise like “normal” seniors. It may be that James Osterberg likes to sit by the fireplace with a book. But not Iggy Pop!
A sound somewhere between rock’n’roll excess and boldly produced self-parody
In “Frenzy”, the furious introduction to the new album, the singer shows the middle finger to all douchebags who want to push him off to retirement: “So get me a try before I fucking die/ My mind is on fire, I will not retire. Chili Pepper Chad Smith, Duff McKagan and Andrew Watt have his back – with a sound somewhere between rock’n’roll excess and boldly produced self-parody.
Josh Klinghoffer, the recently deceased Taylor Hawkins and Dave Navarro are also occasionally used for reinforcement. A major league team of men who know only too well what makes men their age happy. But hey hey, my my, none of us are beginners at rocking anymore. Iggy shows us that 75 doesn’t have to mean the end – as long as you eat healthy and have a personal trainer.
Unfortunately, “Modern Day Rip Off” is little more than a thief tour through the Stooges’ factory. Very powerful and energetic, yes, but without a single new idea. “Morning Show” presents Iggy with a wonderfully deep ballad voice, and the following swing “The News For Andy” also keeps the warm, sonorous tone. Both songs are also great because they fall outside the framework that is often too virile. “Neo Punk” sounds as terrible as they say. Raging music for sixteen year olds with self-discovery problems and occasional erectile dysfunction. But that happens to everyone, honestly. All in all, “Every Loser” is quite a successful collection.
