“If PSV don’t make it to the Champions League now, it will never work again”

PSV has discredited itself with a 2-2 draw, according to club icons Willy and René van de Kerkhof. The brothers thought PSV played excellently, especially in the second half. The brothers cannot imagine that PSV will not finish it at home next week, they say in this week’s Willy and René Podcast. “When you’re standing in front of the gate, you have to open it. Ready,” says René.

The fact that PSV did not win was partly due to the blunder that keeper Walter Benítez made. A free kick coming straight at him went into the goal through his grabbing hands.

Willy doesn’t take the blunder seriously. “That happens to him once, but I maintain that our goalkeeper problem with Benítez has simply been solved. René sees it exactly that way. “With other keepers we have had, you think: an error. Not with Benitez.”

Ball in your balls

Willy and René also think that the goal was not only the keeper’s fault. “That wall was also very strangely separated”, Willy thought. “But maybe Benitez wanted that himself, so he could see the ball.” René thought that there should have been an ordinary wall. “Just three men against each other. And stand still. Then you sometimes get a ball against your balls, but that doesn’t matter, does it?

Next Wednesday, PSV can finish it at home against Rangers and the brothers have no doubts that their club will do the same. “Let’s be honest. This is not a team that is going to keep us out of the Champions League,” says Willy.

In this week’s Podcast, the Kerkhofjes argue about the ideal PSV midfield and, just like last week, René tells about a transfer abroad that was canceled at the last minute.
