It was a windless and sunny spring day today. Until Vanessa De l’Arbre from Stokrooie suddenly saw her trampoline blown onto the garden house. “A small tornado took the trampoline into the air. It happened in a split second,” said a surprised Vanessa. Weatherman David Dehenauw offers a possible explanation.
Vanessa De l’Arbre from Stokrooie was shocked when she unsuspectingly saw a dust pile from her home workplace between the fields this afternoon. (a small tornado, ed.) saw passing by. “It happened in a split second. I looked outside because I suddenly saw the cats sprinting away into the garden. Then I saw a bunch of leaves go into the air and a little later the trampoline in the garden also went into the air. It partly ended up on the garden house and then hung on a number of branches of a tree.”
Swirling leaves
“I walked outside and wanted to make another video, but all you see are some swirling leaves in the distance. Almost incomprehensible on such a beautiful spring day. Then it was completely windless again. If I didn’t have it in a photo, I don’t think anyone would believe it.”
“It may be a local dust storm that has caused local turbulence,” says weatherman David Dehenauw. “That’s warm air that starts to rotate at the bottom and takes things with it in that sudden swirl. However, this often occurs at really warm temperatures. The fact that this is happening so early in the year is quite remarkable. With a force that can also lift a trampoline above a garden shed makes it even more remarkable. A tornado usually arises from a shower. There is no shower involved in a dust storm. However, such strength so early in the year remains surprising.”
Really bizarre
The trampoline is now hanging in the tree and rests partly on Vanessa’s garden house. The washing pole of the clothes rack, which Vanessa said the trampoline blew into, is also bent. “I also asked the neighbors across the street if they had noticed anything about the sudden wind, but they knew nothing. They did see that a bucket that was in our garden suddenly seemed to swirl high in the air. It’s really bizarre. I’ve never experienced it before. In addition, the trampoline is fixed at the bottom with a concrete base. No storm has yet been able to lift it. I have to wait until my partner comes home to get the trampoline back on the ground floor. I suspect that we will have to saw off a number of branches for this,” Vanessa concludes.
