For those who, despite the chaos caused by storm Zoltan, have headed to the Alps for a satisfying ski holiday, the weather forecasts don’t look bad. “It will be dry in the Alps from Monday to Friday,” says weatherman Frank Duboccage. “Ideal skiing conditions, but it will be very mild.” This can have consequences for the quality of snow.
Anyone who left on holiday on Friday may have had to deal with traffic disruptions along the way. Many roads were closed in Austria. There were also problems in France and Italy due to stormy winds and fallen trees. But more stable weather is forecast in the Alps for the coming week.
“There is still a small chance of a shower on Sunday evening, but that actually means little,” says VTM weatherman Frank Duboccage. “And from Monday to Friday it will be dry in most places in the Alps. Occasionally the sun will also be present. So ideal skiing conditions, although it will be very mild. That means the snow can be a bit mushy after noon. But all in all, skiers certainly shouldn’t complain.”
Mushy snow is common at the end of the ski season. Milder temperatures make the snow wet, and therefore heavier and mushy. That means working a little harder, especially for novice skiers.
