World champion Thomas Häßler (56) is on sick leave after memory loss, tinnitus and neck pain and cannot exercise his position as coach of BFC Preussen.

On behalf of his players and the club, sporting director Pierre Seiffert presented a gift basket in Hässler’s apartment on Wednesday. For the first time, the world champion – who has had to sit out a team speech since his blackout on August 17 – is receiving visitors again.

“Icke” smiles again: “I can’t eat that much. It makes me very happy and proud that my boys are thinking of me.”

Häßler reveals: “I still have a rushing noise in my ear, which has even gotten louder and is causing dizziness and balance disorders. That really gets you down. Plus severe neck pain. It all comes together at once, I guess that’s why it just banged like an overheated lightbulb. That might explain the little power outage in my head.”

His blood has now been evaluated. Hässler: “No abnormalities. A test at the ENT doctor is scheduled for September 15th. I hope that the cause is found and fixed. I’ll be happy when the treatment starts and I can stand on the sidelines again later.”
