Ichtegem commemorates crashed cyclist with events and a new beer

The starting shot will be given next week at the start of the Grand Prix Jempi Monsere. Then you can taste a specially brewed beer, the Richard Depoorter 6. The name refers both to the alcohol percentage and to the slope of the tunnel in Wassen where the two-time winner of Liège-Bastogne-Liège has crashed. The label has the color of his last cycling jersey, and the emblem is that of his own bicycle brand. During the Year of Richard there are many activities around the cycling legend, divided into four stages. The beer is the first.

Lieven Cobbaert, mayor of Ichtegem: “Then we have a second stage, which starts at the end of April with a family bike ride, a photo search. On June 16, the date of Richard’s death, we hold a formal memorial at the grave, but in the evening there is a table moment where we look back on Richard’s entire life. Not only his death, but also his victories, such as Liège-Bastogne-Liège, with people from the race and relatives. And we end on September 3 with a Richard day, where we celebrate the center van Ichtegem traffic-free, and organize a Richard picnic.”
