Ice sculpture De Lange Nelle as a tribute and protest

An ode to the tower, but also a bit of a protest against the intervention to remove part of the light. After an hour and a half of cutting and sawing, Lange Nelle emerges from the ice. The lighthouse continues to stir emotions in Ostend. The monument on the Oosteroever symbolizes the struggle not to dim the light.

Sculptor Maximus transforms a block of ice weighing 120 kilograms into a lighthouse about 2 meters high. It is hard work to saw off pieces, to cut the desired shapes, because ice is fragile. And it’s about 8 degrees outside, a bit too warm actually.

This Lange Nelle continues to spread her light unabated, at least until the ice sculpture melts away completely. But the mini version of the lighthouse will survive long enough for the Night of the Museums and Galleries in Ostend.
