Players in the German Ice Hockey League (DEL) will soon have to wear neck protection. The sports directors of the 14 clubs decided this unanimously, as DEL managing director Gernot Tripcke confirmed to Sportschau.
The decision was made during a meeting on Monday (November 6th, 2023), which was also attended by representatives of the “Ice Hockey Players’ Association” (SVE) would have taken part. Implementation at the beginning of 2024 if possible
The decision should be implemented from January 1st if possible, but no later than February 1st, 2024, said Tripcke. The timing depends on the availability of the protection, which is made of special cut-resistant fabric.
The discussion about neck protection was triggered by the death of Adam Johnson.
