Ian Astbury frees fan from stranglehold

Respect and decency are not part of everyone’s virtues – even (and maybe especially) concert-goers know that. Nasty scenes also took place during a show by the English rock band The Cult in Washington DC: in the second row, one spectator was strangled by another – the culprit presumably wanted to get a seat at the front line.

Ian Astbury has his principles: “Only pigs do that!”

However, he had made his calculations without Ian Astbury: During the performance of the cult classic “Rain”, the singer suddenly moved away from the microphone stand and jumped into the stage pit to give the brutalist an unmistakable lecture. He then returned to the stage and intoned the song again.

He then addressed the audience: “Brother, you should never put a stranglehold on anyone. That’s damn uncool. Only pigs do that!” said the 60-year-old. As the nefarious rowdy began to protest, he added: “And stop crying. This is a fucking rock show. You do not like it? Then stand back. You are tall. You are taller than everyone else. You’re in the front row of a rock show. What do you think?” Eventually, the assaulted fan disappeared. “He’s gone,” Astbury said, relieved. “So we can forget about him. He’s gone.” The incident happened on July 19.

New music

Earlier this month, The Cult announced their first full-length in six years with “Under the Midnight Sun” – and the eleventh of their career. The record will be released on October 7th – the single can be released by then “Give Me Mercy” be heard.
