I was actually looking at Saturn’s past

You are lucky if you have a neighbor who is not only nice and funny, a friend really, but who also has a stargazer. A few months ago I was on the roof. The neighbor looked up Saturn for me. “Look,” he said. And yes, there it was. You could see the rings around it, and I yelled, “It looks like a picture, but this is just now!”

“Almost now,” he replied. Oh yes, the light reflected from Saturn isn’t here right away. I was actually looking at Saturn’s past.

Our neighbor/friend passed away too soon. We couldn’t believe he was gone. Not knowing what to do, I looked up how long the light must travel between Earth and Saturn: about one hour and twenty minutes. And I thought about the time when he was already gone, but Saturn still knew nothing about it.
