In the midst of speculation about a possible exit from Red Bull Racing, Formula 1 driver Sergio Pérez has made people sit up and take notice with open words about his future in the premier class of motorsport and his fate with the Austrian racing team.
The early exit at the home Grand Prix in Mexico before the first corner was a hit for Sergio Pérez’s critics last weekend and added further fuel to the wheels of speculation that have been turning vigorously for many weeks.
Although Red Bull – especially team boss Christian Horner – is trying to emphasize that the wavering Mexican will also drive for the dominant Formula 1 team in 2024, the rumors of an end to the Red Bulls do not stop.
Pérez himself has so far been unimpressed by the rumors in his public statements and has now emphasized to “L’Equipe” how he is planning the future. Asked by the French newspaper whether he would fight for the title next year, he said evasively: “At the moment my goal is to get back to my best form. I’m currently 100 percent focused on that.”
Pérez staggers through Formula 1
But then the 33-year-old became more clear. When asked if he wanted to end his career at Red Bull, he said: “Yes, I do.” He immediately gave the reason for his wish: “This team has given me a unique opportunity. And I’m proud to be a part of it.”
Pérez has been driving alongside Formula 1 dominator Max Verstappen since 2021. Last season he came third in the World Championships.
After a good start to 2023, after which the Mexican’s title hopes were briefly raised, which his teammate Verstappen quickly brushed aside with strong performances, Pérez is currently in second place in the drivers’ standings, behind the Dutchman.
However, this position is currently still in danger, Mercedes competitor Lewis Hamilton is only 20 points behind the 33-year-old. If Pérez loses second place in the actually superior Red Bull car, things could get tight for the Mexican – despite his contract until the end of 2024.
