“I’m about to lose everything!” Residents of the flat on Hooilaan in Breda were shocked on Friday evening when the fire alarm went off around half past ten. When they looked to see what was happening, the stairwell of the apartment was full of smoke. Several residents had to be removed from their balconies by the fire brigade using ladders and an aerial platform.
“I was watching ‘Holland sings Hazes’ when my friend suddenly smelled a burning smell,” a woman recalled on Saturday morning. “I became completely stressed. At first I thought that maybe a cigarette had gone bad. But when I opened the door a crack, I saw that the entire stairwell was full of smoke. In a moment I lost everything, shot me came to mind. I immediately called the fire brigade, but they were already on their way.”
“Being taken out of my apartment with the aerial platform was quite scary.”
Eventually, she and her boyfriend were taken from their apartment using a cherry picker. “I thought that was quite scary.”
The damage to her apartment is not too bad. “There’s just the stench of smoke. I’m still a little upset this morning, but I’m glad no one was hurt.”
“I haven’t slept a wink all night.”
A man and his wife were also taken from the balcony with the aerial platform. “I do have experience with that, I have done exercises with the fire brigade,” he says. “But my wife couldn’t get up. She had to use a stepladder. We finally got outside around half past ten at night. At ten to one at night we were allowed back in, but I didn’t sleep a wink all night. “
While he and his wife were unharmed in the fire, their neighbors were hospitalized. They were short of breath because of the amount of smoke that was released by the fire.
“I’m not going to sit around in this stench.”
According to the man, it still stinks in the apartment. “They would have been better off letting the housing association arrange a hotel,” he says. “I’m going to take a shower right away and then leave the house, I’m not going to be stuck with this stench. I’ll leave all the windows open.”
It has not yet been released how the fire was caused.
