Kim Petras and Sam Smith won the Grammy for Best Pop Duo/Best Group Performance with their duet “Unholy.” Petras accepted the award – she is the first trans woman to win an award in this category.
“Sam wanted me to accept this award because I’m the first transgender woman to receive this award,” she said. Her words were met with thunderous applause and a stading ovation. The singer continued, “I just want to thank all of the incredible transgender legends ahead of me who have pushed these doors open for me to be here tonight.”
In her speech, Petras, who comes from Germany, thanked a friend who died in 2021, the musician SOPHIE, who always believed in her. “Thank you for your inspiration, Sophie. I adore you and your inspiration will forever be in my music,” she said. She also thanked Madonna, who fights for LGBT rights: “I don’t think I could be here without Madonna.” Another important person in her life was her mother, who supported her development. She always believed that Petras was a girl: “Without her and her support, I wouldn’t be here.”
The musician also thanked Sam Smith – her song became the first queer collaboration to hit #1 on the US Billboard Hot 100. Petras is the second transgender woman to win a Grammy, after Wendy Carlos.
