‘I missed the mark’

Jan Roos returns in all seriousness to his controversial statements about Eurovision entry Stien den Hollander, known as S10. “I missed the mark. I shouldn’t have made that joke.”

Stien den Hollander, who in the past struggled with suicidal thoughts, was more or less wished dead by presenter Jan Roos in last week’s episode of Gossip Talk. Moreover, he explained to her how to successfully commit suicide. This time, even his own viewers were upset and YouTube removed the episode.

Not a little boy

Jan comes in the latest GossipTalk back on his slip. “It was meant as a joke and it came across as giving some sort of manual on how to commit suicide. Look, I’m not a little boy at all, I can really admit when something isn’t fun or didn’t work out. Sometimes a joke doesn’t work and this one didn’t work.”

Jan often does not take criticism seriously. “Most of the people who respond have never seen Gossip Talk and don’t know at all what we’re making here and that we have tough humor and make satire and that it’s black humor and that we often cross the line. But also people who watched Gossip Talk said: ‘John, this was not fun.’”

Sour left huts

What else did those people say? “They said, ‘I literally felt like I was being betrayed because I also have psychological problems or I know someone who committed suicide’, or whatever.”

Jan continues: “Look, I can’t believe those sour left-wing huts in Amsterdam don’t like it, but that our own viewer says: ‘This was not funny, this was across borders, I find it very annoying.’ Yes, I’ll think about it then. I looked it up and it didn’t look good. It wasn’t good, so something unique is going to happen: I’m going to apologize.”

Hurt

It just wasn’t good content, says Jan. “I hurt people, including our own audience, with that joke that didn’t really look like a joke, nor was it interpreted that way. Then I missed the mark. I want to apologize, I shouldn’t have made that joke.”
