The Catholic University of Valencia has taught a class to present the University Expert Course in prevention, detection and accompaniment in addiction to pornography

The consumption of pornography in Spain is worrisome, and a lot. 70 percent of young Spaniards have seen porn on the internet, which is accessed for the first time at age 8. Although its consumption is generalized at 14, the average age of initiation is 11 years. Furthermore, 90 percent of male college students believe that porn is true to real sexuality, and 80 percent of youth who view porn engage in aggressive sexual behavior.

These are some of the figures that Javier Rosdirector of the University Expert Course in prevention, detection and accompaniment in addiction to pornography at the Catholic University of Valencia has exposed during the presentation of the second course that will begin in October, the only one in all Spain focused on this matter and whose objective is to provide parents and teachers with tools “through affordable, accessible training designed for direct intervention”.

Thus, the professors and experts that make up the teaching team of the title have agreed to ensure that addiction to pornography is a “great hidden and ignored pandemic that is affecting the studies, relationships and many other aspects of our young people today in day” above all “because of the great accessibility they have through the screens.

Modify sexual behaviors

Also participated in the session Juan Colomina, who has warned that “I have not seen addiction as powerful as that of pornography.” During his speech in an open class to present the second edition of the course, the expert explained that the increase in porn consumption and addiction are the result of a cumulative process of three overlapping behaviors: “addiction to the screen, the addiction to sexual behavior and the format of short videos of about 4 minutes that when they finish hook up with the next one”.

The psychologist has stressed the importance of including pornography within the generic concept of addiction and has highlighted the important role of new technologies in the increase, since “they are facilitators of addictive behaviors by providing accessibility, affordability and anonymity”. In this sense, he assures that “access barriers have disappeared, the filters that used to help people to regulate themselves.” Furthermore, he clarifies that “sexual addiction has no gender as this is affecting both men and women.

Reviewing the consequences it entails in society, colomina He has alluded to “the dangers of superstimulus” and its relational impact, since “it provides what you want, when you want, how you want, effortlessly and just by pressing a button”. Thus, this ends up affecting the relationships of people in their work, family and social environments.

Likewise, it has highlighted the “brutal impact” that pornography supposes in the family environment since “women whose husbands view pornography have the same feeling of betrayal than if they were with a real woman”, he pointed out, adding that this also affects “the children since it affects the development of the children’s identity as there is a normalization process”.

Finally, he has assured that “it is an addictive behavior with a growing process. It is not that the person wants to see more and more, it is that they want to see rarer things, and this generates a strong impact on their identity.”

The second edition begins on October 29

The University Expert Course in prevention, detection and follow-up of addiction to pornography “arises in the face of the serious social emergency of the diffusion, already at a very early age, of this phenomenon, which profoundly affects the correct development of the person”. In this way, “it comes to fill an alarming void in Spanish university education, given that it is a pioneer in this field of training,” they point out from the organization.

The panel of experts is made up of professionals and teachers from the Catholic University of Valenciaespecially from the Adolescence, addiction and development research group, led by Isabella Senabre and the Valencian section of the Pontifical John Paul II Theological Institute.

The second edition will begin on Saturday October 29 and has been opened to undergraduate students. Another novelty is that, due to the high demand for the first edition, it will be taught synchronously: in the Headquarters San Carlos Borromeo and online for all those interested who cannot attend in person.
