‘I draw dolls with feelings that I often have myself’

Statue Adriaan van der Ploeg

With whom and where do you live?

‘I live in Leerdam with my father Jeroen (43), my mother Relinde (44), brother Solar (13), sister Sen (7) and our two rabbits Rainbow (4) and Fondue (2). I like it very much at home.’

Do you have any hobbies?

‘Playing with my friends, dancing, crafting and drawing. I like to draw dolls. Every time I make them something different. Sometimes I draw one that’s crying and then I draw another one that’s totally happy. Those are feelings that I often have myself, but I don’t express them very quickly. But that’s what I do in my drawings. I like that and drawing is also just great fun.’

What do you like to craft?

‘Everything with, for example, boxes from the kitchen that we no longer use. But now there are a lot of leaves in the garden. I recently made a painting where I painted over the autumn leaves. That gives a nice pattern. This afternoon I’m going to do something like this again with a friend.’

Who are your friends?

‘I have many girlfriends. I met my best friend Quinn at my children’s party in the Monkeytown indoor playground. Then my father lost us and found us in a very large box of bricks hidden in a corner. We were chatting and giggling. Then my father thought, well, this is going to be something. And that’s how we became best friends.’

Who would you like to be for a day?

‘One of the rabbits. Rainbow and Fondue don’t really have anything to do. They are nice and idle and I want that for a day. Every day I have to do something from my parents, like cleaning the rabbit hutch. That will no longer be necessary for a while.’

Where would you like to go on vacation?

‘We often go to Texel. I think that is a nice place because there is a lot of nature. Then we go camping. My father, mother and brother set up the tent. I like to go swimming and play games at the camping, such as live stratego. There was once a ghost tour in the woods. I wanted to participate in that, but then I heard that people are going to run after you in the dark. Then I didn’t want to anymore.’

Where do you see yourself in ten years?

‘Maybe I’m studying to be an art teacher. I want to teach children how to make all kinds of different drawings. For example, how to draw someone who is smiling in different ways, or someone who is crying. I think it would be nice to talk about it together and be creative with it.’
